For Fans By Fans!

Against the fansubbers (most specifically, the digi-subbers):
1. The only work on the newest anime, neglecting golden oldies and ignoring the fact that the most of the titles they choose will probably be commercialized anyway.
2. Multiple groups vying for the "fame game" prize of being able to say they put a title out first, often at the expense of quality and accuracy.
3. Lack of integrity, groups continuing to sub and distribute after a title has been picked up or in the case of traditional fansubbers, charging more than the cost of tape and shipping to distribute fansub titles therefore making a profit at the fans and creators expenses.

Against the commercial companies:
1. Too expensive, too little value in the product for the expense of the product. (I.E. 2 episodes on a vhs or dvd, $26 dollars for an hour long movie, ect) [I should note I have less sympathy on this one since I remember when it was $40-$50 bucks for a tape, if you could find it at all]
2. No respect for the material. Extensive editing to "Americanize/Westernize" the product, changing names, cutting out "offensive" material such as references to homosexuality or death, cleansing it of untranslatable concepts like honorifics, japanese festivals/holidays, ect.
3. Not enough action taken fast enough. Licensing titles and sitting on them for years, taking forever to release a television series or set of OVAs, constant unexplained delays and a whole environment laced with an indifference to fans desire for information.
4. Releasing only "sure-thing" mainstream product. This has changed a bit over the past couple of years, but still, only the hottest of the hot, the biggest of the big, and things that look like just like them are brought over. Pokemon makes a big splash and suddenly Digimon, Flint the Time Detective, and Yu-gi-oh are suddenly brought to the market. DBZ makes a splash and you see more fighting titles, Gundam? more robots surely to follow.

What can we do about it?
