Fruits
Basket Chapter 26 Summary!
This is the second half of the manga episode where Shigure convinces Tooru,
Yuki and Kyou to go to the Souma villa by the lake for golden week
(with Hatori dragged along for the ride). It opens with Tooru, Yuki
and Kyou starting to head out for a trip to the lake. Tooru starts
to invite Hatori to come along but realizes he has fallen asleep
while reading on the couch. While Kyou professes amazement that
Hatori is sleeping, or rather sleeping in front of other people,
Tooru bustles off to get a blanket to cover him with.
Shigure compliments her and tells her what a great wife she'll
make. Ayame agrees and praises her. There is a long pause as everyone
deals with the fact that Ayame has appeared out of nowhere in the
middle of the room. Then the regular chaos begins with Yuki and
Kyou trying to figure out why he's there while Ayame and Shigure
flirt with each other. Ayame spouts some nonsense and tries to bond
with Yuki. Yuki tells him to go sink in the lake.
All the commotion wakes Hatori. He scolds Ayame and gets out of
him how he came to be here. (He'd heard from Hatori's assistant
that they were all up at the villa and decided to join them). Hatori
reminds the younger set that they were off to the lake and sends
them on their way. Ayame and Shigure flirt some more. Ayame then
reveals he brought tea for them all to drink.
Yuki, Kyou and Tooru have arrived at the lake and Tooru admires
it. It gives her a good feeling. Yuki and Kyou aren't getting the
same vibe. They're both depressed over Ayame being there. Kyou complains
that Yuki should get rid of him since Ayame is Yuki's brother. Yuki
says he can't do anything about it and it devolves into the typical
brawl between the two. They both start complaining about having
to be at the lake with the other. Then they rush to explain to Tooru
that its not that they don't like the lake, or that they didn't
want to come, it's just that they hate the other person. Tooru responds
with just a shocked yes, and the boys get embarrassed about their
outburst. Tooru smiles and stands next to them and admires the lake.
The boys agree with her and it's a sweet scene.
Ayame gives Hatori an envelope back at the villa. It turns out
they are photos of his Kana's, his ex, wedding. Ayame had gotten
them from Mayuko a friend of Kana's that Shigure dated for a month.
Shigure and Ayame suggest that Hatori should have stolen Kana away,
but the doctor says that its over.
He reflects on the end of their relationship. He knows that they
couldn't be together without it destroying her, so even if he wanted
to be with her he doesn't hope for it anymore. Now all he wants
is for her to be happy.
Ayame disagrees and says he's angry with Kana. Angry that she gets
to forget and be happy while Hatori has to bear the burden of remembering
their tragic relationship. Hatori says he doesn't think so. Shigure
and Ayame say that Hatori deserves be happy, especially when he'd
been through so much. Ayame thinks that if not Kana, then Hatori
should find someone else and start over. He thinks that Hatori should
be MUCH happier than Kana.
Hatori distracts Ayame by telling him he should display that kind
of attitude in front of Yuki. Shigure is not distracted though,
saying Hatori will soon meet with someone he didn't notice before
and then they'd be together and happy.
Hatori reflects that having a new relationship is too much to ask
considering the junninshi curse. That he had his moment with Kana
should be enough. He looks over to where Yuki, Tooru and Kyou are
returning from the lake. Now all he wants is to look over them,
to watch over them and make sure that they don't go down the same
path he did. He wants to make sure they don't become unhappy.
Ayame rushes out to greet Yuki and "his friends". Kyou objects
to being referred to as Yuki's friend. Ayame tells Yuki that he
got great advice from Hatori. Yuki, he says, must bow to the fact
that he is his older brother and accept him. Yuki considers this
for a moment in silence before exploding that he'd rather die.
Hatori and Shigure sip their tea and comment that Ayame completely
misunderstood. Shigure thinks to himself that Hatori would meet
with someone soon. During this inner monologue the scene suddenly
shifts to some students calling for Mayuko, the younger set's teacher.
After telling them to call her by a much more formal name then "Mayu-chan-sensei",
they ask how her day off was. On the desk are two photographs, Mayuko
standing next to a Kana in her bridal gown, and underneath, a picture
of a Hatori.
